Reminders for Competitions
- Details and session times are subject to change!
- Check with Coach Geno for the times he wants your gymnasts to report
- Take your grips home after the last practice before a meet
- What to wear, what to pack
What to Expect at a Meet
- Most meets will last about 4 hours
- Flash photography is not allowed!
- Dress in comfortable, layered clothing. It can be a little chilly in some of the competition facilities
- If younger siblings are coming to watch, bring some activities to help occupy their time (GameBoy, books, coloring books)
- There will be an entry fee
- There are usually concession stands, raffles, and items for sale
- Meets are held in a variety of venues: gyms, schools, arenas
- You will often be sitting on bleachers or chairs. You might want to bring a cushion.
When you first arrive at a meet, your gymnast will check in and get their number. They will then go with the coach to the warm up area. Parents and spectators pay their admission and buy a program if you want one.
There is usually about 1/2 hour when the kids do a general stretch. They will then get ready for march in. Our gymnasts are required to wear the full competition warm-up completely zipped for march in. After all the teams march in the National Anthem is played. Then the teams go into their squads.
There are usually 4 squads, unless there are two flights. At that time, the gymnasts go to the judges tables for an introduction, then proceed to warm-up. Competitions follow the Olympic order for events: vault, bars, beam, floor. The fours squads each start on different events. The gymnasts then begin their timed warmups. After warm up is complete, the competition begins. After all squads are done on their event, they march to their next one.
The warmups just prior to each event are timed and often our gymnasts warmup with gymnasts from other teams. On the balance beam, there usually is a warm up beam and a competition beam. They get one minute to warm up and then a 30 second touch on the competition beam. (This is not always the case as warmups can vary from meet to meet.)
After the competition is complete, there is an awards ceremony. There are usually three age groups for level 4. Awards are given out starting with the youngest age group for each event, then for the all around score. After all age groups have been given their individual awards, team awards are presented. After this is complete, you get to go home!
Parents are never to walk out onto the competition floor. This could result in your gymnast being disqualified. If you are needed for any reason (for example, illness or injury), wait until the coach comes to get you. Please cheer for your gymnast and all the girls. We love to hear you when we are out on the floor. Do not approach any of the judges. If you have a question about a score, we will do our best to explain it to you.
Most of all, have fun! Your girls have worked hard to get to this level of gymnastics, and the experiences they will have are more important than any score that they could receive.
